May 7 walk to benefit six Columbus AIDS groups
Columbus residents will soon lace up their sneakers for "AIDS Walk '95, Columbus Walks for Life," a community pledge walk to raise $130,000 in critical funding to support HIV/AIDS services and education.
Hosted by six central Ohio HIV/AIDS organizations, AIDS Walk '95 will focus attention on the impact of AIDS in our community while raising money to support muchneeded programs and services provided by each group. Proceeds from the walk will aid nearly 1,500 clients with HIV/AIDS and will reach more than 80,000 people through HIV/ AIDS educational programs. The walk will create community-wide awareness and involvement in the fight against AIDS.
Scheduled to begin at 2 pm on Sunday, May 7, participating walkers will meet downtown at Bicentennial Park for a 4.5-mile trek along High Street, past City Center, through downtown and the Short North area, then
returning along a course across Neil Ave., Park and Front Streets through Victorian Village and Goodale Park. An optional twomile journey is also planned. Walkers can register for the walk between 11:00 am and 1:30 pm.
Organizers hope to attract 1,000 walkers for this inaugural walk. Potential walkers should call the AIDS Walk Information Hotline at 614-447-5050 to register or stop by any Kinko's Copies store to pick up a pledge form.
Beneficiaries of the event include the Columbus AIDS Task Force, the HIV/AIDS Consortium for People of Color, Metropolitan Residential Services, the Ohio AIDS Coalition, the Positive Vision Theatre, and Project Open Hand-Columbus. With support from AIDS Walk '95, these organizations will provide information and referral services, operate the Ohio AIDS Hotline, con-
duct prevention education programs, offer housing for people with AIDS, and deliver meals to people living with AIDS.
AIDS has had a devastating effect on the lives of men, women and children throughout central Ohio. AIDS is now the leading cause of death for men ages 25 to 44 in our community and is fast becoming one of the leading causes of death for women in the same age group. Since 1981, more than 700 people have died of AIDS-related causes in Columbus and Franklin County.
The growth of AIDS cases still disproportionately impacts the African-American community, and while pediatric AIDS cases are
fairly stable, there is disturbing growth in the number of teenagers being diagnosed as HIV positive. The number of new AIDS cases continues to grow in the Columbus area, and there is still little hope for a cure before the year 2000.
"AIDS Walk '95 will bring together people from all walks of life who want to show their support for HIV/AIDS services and education," said chair Julie Graber. "We know this deadly disease touches the lives of all of us. It's important for us to come together as a community as these six AIDS organizations have if we are going to win the battle against this tragic epidemic.)
